Coral Warren recognised for services to sport

Coral Warren has been awarded the Keith Peel Services to Sport Award at the Active Norfolk Eastern Daily Press Sports Awards.

Coral Warren set up the Post Surgery Support Group in May 1995 originally to provide support and rehabilitation through sport and exercise for ladies with breast cancer. As a Badminton Association of England Advanced Coach and Tutor Assessor – and having had breast cancer herself – Coral believed she could help women who believed they’d have difficulty playing sport, to overcome a lack of mobility and encourage them to play sport again.

Participants from the Post Surgery Support Group attend specially designed classes choosing from Badminton, Hatha Yoga and Aqua Stretch at Sportspark every week. Exercises are planned specifically for the needs of women who have been diagnosed with cancer and have had treatment or surgery. Badminton and Aqua Stretch classes were the first forms of sport offered; Yoga was added later to help those women who felt too frail to try Badminton for the first time and others who were in the early stages of their diagnosis and treatment and therefore feeling less energetic and more vulnerable.

Since setting up the group Coral has maintained its smooth operation, managing the group’s finances and planning fundraising initiatives and securing funding grants to ensure the groups survival.

Over the past 15 years Coral’s group has helped over 65 women, some who have attended the group for years. In March 2011 one of Coral’s longest members, Gwen, who joined aged 67 to learn how to play Badminton, celebrated her 80th birthday. Now at the age of 80 she continues to play the sport each week, meeting friends and keeping active as part of her life after cancer.

Since the group was set up it has grown and now welcomes women who have been diagnosed with any form of cancer.  It doesn’t matter how long ago or how recently that diagnosis was given, Coral will welcome anyone who wants to use sport to help with their recovery. Everybody who has joined the group has found the exercise, social interaction and support very helpful at a difficult time of their life.

Coral deserved to win the Keith Peel Services to Sport Award as recognition for her contribution to sport in Norfolk and in particular for her dedication to helping women affected by cancer use the power of sport to change their lives for the better. Sportspark is very pleased Coral won and proud to have her helping lots of people at Sportspark.
