Sportspark donates £700 to the Meningitis Trust in memory of UEA student
February 13th, 2012
Sportspark has donated £700 to the Meningitis Trust after the University of East Anglia hockey club held its annual fundraiser in memory of former student and team mate, Mike Covell.
On 7 December 1997, UEA student and first team hockey player, Mike Covell, passed away after a brief battle with meningitis. Since 2001, the year Mike was due to graduate, the University hockey club have run an annual event to increase awareness, remember Mike and help raise money for the Meningitis Trust.
This year’s charity match was held on Sunday 30 October. The highlight of the memorial weekend is the annual “Old Boys” match. The 1997 team reform and, with Mike’s older brother David taking his place in the side, they take on the current first team. This year the format was revised and following a round robin tournament a “Best of UEA Old Boys” took on the present first team and won 2-1.
This year’s event raised just under £2,000 including a donation of £700 from the Sportspark. The £700 has been raised from customers donating their change for copies of the Eastern Daily Press and Norwich Evening News, through a promotion in conjunction with Archant Norfolk.
With various marathons run and mountains climbed by Mikes former friends and team mates, the total funds raised on behalf of the Meningitis Trust by members of the University hockey club, past and present, exceeds £25,000. The Covell reunion remains an integral part of the UEA calendar.
Acting Director of Sport, Maria Rowe, said “The UEA hockey club should be very proud of their efforts and all the money they have raised over the last ten years for the Meningitis Trust. I’m sure Mike’s family are touched by the support his team mates and friends have given to increasing awareness and ensuring this annual event takes place. I’m really pleased that the Sportspark has been able to add to this year’s donation thanks to our generous customers.”
