Sportspark donates to Norwich Sea Scout group
November 9th, 2011
Sportspark has made a donation of £700 to the First Norwich Sea Scout Group for their new headquarters fund. The group are currently trying to raise £400,000 for the project, which aims to offer first class facilities for children and young people to learn new skills.
Sportspark customers have raised the £700 by making small donations in return for copies of the Eastern Daily Press and Norwich Evening News, through a promotion in conjunction with Archant. Over the last year £5600 has been donated to local charities and good causes with a connection to sport and wellbeing.
The new sustainable headquarters will accommodate over 70 Sea Scouts, Cubs and Beavers as well as offering opportunities to Girl Guides and Brownies from the South Norwich area, local schools, community groups and individuals with special needs. The building will replace the current headquarters in Old Lakenham which is run down and uneconomical to run. So far the group have raised £236,000 and they are currently waiting for decisions to be made on several bids for funding. If successful it is hoped initial building work could commence next Spring.
Kelvin Woodard, treasurer of the fundraising committee said “The First Norwich Sea Scouts offers challenging activities including canoeing, boating, climbing, and camping experiences all in the safety of its grounds. There is direct access to the river for our water-based activities via our new quay heading. Our new headquarters will benefit hundreds of local young people and the project would be a non-starter without the support of local organisations like the Sportspark.”
Acting Director of Sportspark, Maria Rowe, said “Scouting benefits young people in so many ways, from the social interaction it provides, learning new skills, making friends and of course keeping active in the outdoors. I’m really pleased to be able to make this donation on behalf of our generous customers, who are continuing to support local projects and good causes.”
